      While many divers are familiar with the iconic sca While many divers are familiar with the iconic scalloped hammerhead, the smooth hammerhead is far more elusive, preferring the cooler waters of temperate oceans. This was my very first encounter with the species. Unlike scalloped hammerheads, they don’t form the massive schools they’re famous for. They cross entire ocean basins, traveling up to 9,200 km on their migrations in search of food. The Azores is a truly magical place for diving, surrounded by some of the clearest waters I have ever seen.       Happy World Oceans Day! I’m incredibly honored to Happy World Oceans Day! I’m incredibly honored to be the Winner of the William Hammer Blackwater Category in the Ocean Geographic Pictures of the Year Competition 2026. This image is of a tiny larval marine snail (veliger), photographed earlier this year during a blackwater dive in Anilao, Philippines. Every time I photograph underwater, I’m reminded of how much beauty and wonder exists beneath the surface. On World Oceans Day, I hope this image inspires others to appreciate and protect our incredible marine world. A huge thank you to Michael Aw, the judges, and my guide Dexter Mendoza for making this experience possible.
